Hamra is in West Beirut, on the Muslim side of the old Green line that separated the city during the civil war. It was once attacked by Israeli planes but now it is one of Beirut’s commercial and cultural centres. It was also our home in Beirut. If you walk down Hamra street, you will notice first of all the traffic: Hamra is famous for its traffic, caused mainly by the tiny streets and one-way system that operates in the neighbourhood. The service (taxis) are often full of students, on their way to American University of Beirut, and the Lebanese American University, two of Lebanon’s best universities, both located in Hamra. The noise and the pollution on Hamra street almost make you go home, but you continue. Lots of traffic, service vans or taxis, and a lot of noise, as you can imagine. On a busy day, it’s an intense sensory experience. But if you persist through the smog, it’s worth it, especially if you go to Em Nazih, an Hamra institution of food, music, and shisha. If you ask anybody what to do in Hamra, the answer is to go to Em Nazih and try their food. Em Nazih is one of Beirut’s most popular restaurants, where you will find Lebanese people eating food and smoking shisha all day. In the morning, you will find foul, fetteh, and pancakes. The rest of the day you will find some of the most delicious mezzeh in Beirut, with the classic Lebanese tabbouleh and spicy potatoes, as well as delicious hummus, moutabbal, and lubieh(?). On Friday night, you will find live Arabic music and a full restaurant. I’m really sorry if this episode is making you hungry, but it would be impossible to talk about places in the Middle East without talking about food. Lebanese people are very proud of their food, and to be honest, they’re not wrong. But there’s more to this neighbourhood, like a church mainly attended by Filipino domestic workers, shwarma chains, and evidence of the lack of a social safety net in Lebanon. If you ever leave Em Nazih (and be warned: many people never do, getting trapped in a vicious cycle of hummus, shisha, and coffee), you can wander further into Hamra. You will find many things. On the left of Hamra street is a Christian church, which is filled with Filipino domestic workers on a Sunday. Across from the church on a Sunday, you will also find a Filipino market where clothes, jewellery, and food are all sold. Go a little bit further and you will find Barbar, one of Lebanon’s favourite shwarma chains, where you can order a chicken shwarma (with fries and lots of garlic sauce), which we promise that you will eat in no more than 2 minutes. We once found a beautiful kitten here that we kept for many months before we found her a permanent home. We called her Barbar. Lebanese people were very confused. On the darker side, you will also find Syrian refugees and poor Lebanese living on the sides of the street, their children running after passing tourists in the hope of eating dinner that night. Nearby, you will find an elderly man who cannot afford to retire selling corn and chestnuts from his old cart, the lovely smell filling the entire street. Diversity, kittens, mixing cultures, poverty, and noise. If you’re trying to sum up a picture of Hamra, that’s not a bad summary. But any portrait of Hamra would be woefully lacking without talking about AUB, a cat-filled university campus with beautiful Mediterranean views. Go right towards the sea, and you will find Bliss street, home to American University of Beirut, Lebanon’s most beautiful and most prestigious university. Hand your passport to the guard, and you can walk around the grounds. AUB has a large camps, with an amazing variety of trees that are usually filled with flowers, smells, and colours. If you walk around, you will see the old colonial buildings, and the new ones like the Issam Feres Institute, a building that is famous for its controversial architecture beside the classical style of the rest of AUB. Hamra is on a hill just above the Mediterranean coast of Beirut, so you can sit on one of the many benches around campus and look down at the Mediterranean. We don’t recommend it if you don’t like cats. The AUB grounds are home to hundreds of cats (I don’t know if it’s actually hundreds but it feels like hundreds). The university feeds the cats and takes care of them, and most of them are very friendly (but not all of them so watch out for the ones that bite). The sounds you will hear in AUB include: the wind in the trees, the waves in the Mediterranean Sea, and the sound of Lebanese students mixing English, Arabic, and French in every sentence. ‘Yani ma b3ref kif aamal the assignment, toi tu sais?’ A blissful experience during the chaos of Lebanon’s rush hour, and if you had gone to Lebanon last year, you would have been able to follow it up with another: a trip to Dar, where Amer worked until recently, and where I spent around 50% of my time in Beirut. Unfortunately, due to the economic crisis, Dar is now closing. If you were in Hamra last year, and you left AUB, walked up Bliss street, past McDonalds and baklawa shops, you would have found Dar Bistro and Books. I would have welcomed you, and you would probably have seen Keire sitting inside, working on her laptop. Dar was a beautiful restaurant with a lovely little English language bookshop, and a photography school upstairs. It was one of our favourite places in the city, where you could breathe the smell of jasmine and enjoy the peace compared with the streets outside. It was also a great place to meet Beirut’s cultural elite, and to listen in on Lebanese conversations. Unfortunately, Dar is one of the many businesses that have closed due to the economic crisis. We can only hope that this doesn’t happen to the other icons of Hamra’s history, and that Dar, where some of our best memories in Beirut were, finds a way to open its doors again. Luckily, it’s not all bad news. Other cultural institutions will hopefully remain open, and to get to them, you have to pass the Central Bank, now a subject of controversy. Thankfully, there is one Dar that did not close. Near to Dar Bistro is Dar En-Nimer, an amazing art gallery that has exhibitions regularly. Sometimes, they’re about old Arabic movies, other times about Palestinians. We saw an amazing photo exhibition there about the Lebanese civil war. If you’re not interested in photos, you can also go for the air-conditioning. Believe me, in August in Beirut, you’ll need it. In order to get to Dar En-Nimer from Dar Bistro, you have to pass the Lebanese Central Bank, which is now a very controversial building. Many people blame the Central Bank for the current economic crisis. The Central Bank blames the government. They’re probably all right. During the revolution, there were regular protests outside the central bank.
