On Wednesday morning, May 11, 2022, who did not hear about the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, with a bullet in the head?
Perhaps most of those who know Palestine and Shireen, and even those who never knew Shireen, felt helpless as we always get this feeling when we see the violations of Israeli occupation. Pictures of Shireen’s assassination brought back to us a rush in memories related to the violence and barbarity of Israel; many of us recalled the scene of the child Muhammad Durrah being martyred in his father's arms where he was hiding from the Israeli occupation shootings. The news varied according to the media agencies and how they deal with the Palestinian cause, some said that Shireen Abu Aqleh was killed, some said she was martyred, and others said that she died. Shireen did not die and was not killed accidently, but she was martyred. I do not know if there is a synonym for the word “martyred” in other languages. In Arabic, it is a word derived from the verb “witness”, which means a witness to the crimes and violations, and so was Shireen, a witness to the crimes of the Israeli occupation until she was martyred. Thus she had additional evidence against the occupation which has been committing crimes since 1948, and this is what we will talk about later in the Palestine issue. Shireen is a Palestinian journalist, born in 1971. She was born after the Nakba, and after the setback, she lived in occupied Palestine. Palestine extends from the eastern Mediterranean to the Jordan Valley, which connects West Asia and Africa, which was a crossing point and meeting throughout history, from which many civilizations emerged, such as the Canaanites, and Palestine The cradle of the Abrahamic monotheistic religions. Shireen studied journalism at Yarmouk University in Jordan, and joined Al Jazeera as a correspondent in 1997. Since then, Shireen has covered pivotal events in Palestine. Shireen, along with her camera, witnessed successive and continuous violations from the Israeli occupation and its army against Palestinian civilians. Shireen, the name we should always remember, faced many dangers. She said while covering Israel’s invasion of the West Bank in 2002: "In the difficult moments, I overcame my fear. I chose journalism to be close to the people. It might not be easy to change the reality but at least I could bring their voice to the world.” Shireen summarised what it meant to be a journalist in one sentence. Back to our childhood, we still remember the moments of freezing in front of the TV to hear the news of the Occupied Palestinian Territory through Shireen’s voice. We remember her during the Jenin massacre in 2002 when she was helping the people to search for their children under the rubble. On May 11, Shireen was assassinated in Jenin after 20 years of covering the Jenin invasion in the same place. Shireen was our eyes, through which we can see Jerusalem, Jaffa, Haifa, Nablus, Ramallah, Jenin, Jericho, Khan Yunis, Acre, Safed, Ramla, Gaza, Beersheba, Tulkarm, Bisan, Hebron, Tiberias, Nazareth, Kafr Rumman. We wanted to be with them, dreaming of the freedom of Palestine. The Israeli occupation was not satisfied with assassinating Shireen, who terrified Israel with her camera and voice, but also tried to assassinate her funeral, by storming her home and her family’s home, attacking her funeral, beating her mourners and shooting them, and denying the assassination. As for the latest updates on the assassination of Shirin, American reports have issued confirming that Shirin was killed by Israeli bullets, but "by mistake." This is what pissed everyone off. She was targeted while wearing a helmet and a press jacket, and in early September 2022 a British investigation was released based on the Forensic Architecture Foundation, which is concerned with investigating violations against human rights. The investigation confirms that Shireen was directly targeted by Israeli bullets. The Israeli occupation has always been afraid of documenting memories, the act that Shireen insisted on doing perfectly through the media until she was assassinated. The Israeli occupation was afraid of the revolutionary songs of her mourners, those songs that bring us back to the past and remind us daily of what the occupation did and does, as Mahmoud Darwish said: On this earth is something worth living for: Hesitation of April’s weather The smell of bread at dawn A woman’s thoughts for men Aeschylus’ writings Love’s beginnings grass on a stone mothers standing on a thread of flute and invaders who are frightened of memories On this earth is something worth living for: The end of September A lady leaving her forties with all its fruits The sun in a prison Clouds copying the shapes of creatures The screams of the public heading towards their end and smiling And the tyrants frightened of songs On this earth is something worth living for: The land, mother of beginnings mother of ends It was called Palestine It became Palestine. My lady, I deserve you Because you are my lady I deserve to be alive. Mahmoud Darwish is one of the most famous Palestinian poets who wrote for the land for the homeland, for the love of the mother for Palestine. He was born in 1941 and died in 2008. His poems were translated into several languages and some of them sang in several languages. Jean-Luc Goddard, the French director, made a documentary on the Palestinian resistance and documented interviews with him, in addition to that his poems were used by pioneers The French third wave in their cinematic works, singer Roger Warters presented him with the album "Wait for It" in honor of him and Palestine.
