Why Don’t They Teach History in Schools in Lebanon?
We know what you’re thinking: that can’t be true. Of course they teach history in schools in Lebanon. And you’re right. They do. But in public schools it stops in 1943, the year that Lebanon was established. So Lebanese children learn about France, Europe, America, the Ottoman Empire. But nothing about Lebanon. Nothing about the civil war that almost destroyed their country 30 years ago. In private schools, if they teach it, they teach their side of the story: the Muslim side, the Christian side, the Druze side, but no bigger picture of how those divisions led to the war. This is worrying, especially because of the history of violence between religious groups in Lebanon. We want to look at why the Lebanese don’t teach history in their schools, and why we think this is important. Nothing; to heal the deep divide in Lebanese society after the war, nothing was done. Many people here say that when the war ended, the militia leaders took off their military uniforms, put on suits and became the political leaders of the country. There was a general amnesty, an agreement that nobody was to blame and a rule that the war should not be discussed, everyone would just continue with their lives and pretend it never happened. There was no Truth Commission, like in South Africa, where people could talk about their sadness, and about what happened to them. There were no efforts to create a national narrative around those 15 years, and to learn any national lessons from the war. Usually this is the role of history in education: to create a united understanding of the past, to reunite a country, or even to learn to never repeat the mistakes of the past. In Lebanon, that never happened. It was agreed in the Taif Agreement, which ended the civil war, that one history book should be created to be taught in schools. However, when the government tried to create this, nobody could agree on what it should say. Should it tell one side of the story? The phrase that history is written by the winners didn’t help, because there were no winners of the Lebanese civil war. Should it just talk about how terrible the war was for the economy, society, people, but not have any details? Nobody could agree. So it was left, and the official history textbook was unchanged, stopping in 1943. Public schools were left to teach from this book, and the private schools were allowed to pick their own version of history. This means that there are many versions of history taught in schools, divided upon both religious and economic lines. Even Hezbollah wrote a history book that it teaches in their schools taught within their schools. This means that Lebanese students learn either one side of story or nothing at all. In a country full of bullet holes, the children who learn nothing obviously know that there was a war. In search of truth and information they turn to their families, who usually come from one religious group, and can tell only one side of the story. So in the end, all students learn just one side of the story, their side. So what next? How should this problem be resolved? One suggestion has been that all sides of the story are told separate from but next to one another: this is what the Sunnis say, this is what the Palestinians say, this is what the Christians say etc. We believe that in a country with so many identities, the best solution is to be honest and open about the differences and similarities that led to the war in the first place, and that still exist in the country today. Teaching history can be a powerful tool. If Lebanon were to choose to educate children on whatever “the other side of the story” maybe, it would help them to start to understand the other, which we believe Lebanon needs now more than ever. In a country where sectarianism is still a part of everyday life, this is a dangerous division to be left alone. However, there is no political will in Lebanon today to fix this problem, probably because the people who caused the war and committed terrible crimes are still in charge of the country. But as the Lebanese poet Gibran Khalil Gibran said: History doesn’t repeat itself, except in the minds of those who are ignorant of their history.
