She is one of the amazing artists in Beirut and she is one of my Best friends so hi Dzovig. Hello Amer, thank you so much for the beautiful introduction and i am honoured to be your best friend. Okay Dzovig tell us a little bit about yourself today . Hello Amer, First of all, I would like to thank you for this beautiful opportunity that you have given me to introduce myself and to talk about my artistic and cultural project. First of all my name is Dzovig Arnelian, I am Lebanese Armenian, i am 26 years old and I am from Bourj Hammoud. I graduated from Lebanese University last year, in Plastic Arts, and this artistic journey that lasted for 5 years, is what made me first as a person, second as an artist and third as an entrepreneur . Tell us about your practice as an artist Through my artistic journey in the university I was getting introduced to different artistic materials and techniques around the world so I could choose from it the materials that are most similar to me and my character and the things that I like to talk about. Being a girl from a very patriarchal society, my biggest obsession in my art was and still is to talk about feminism and to criticize the patriarchy in a way that is artistic, bold and in the same time straight-forward. Can you give us an example about some of the interesting things that you have created? Have you had any exhibitions? What were they about? I consider myself an experimental artist and I like working on different materials. The latest exhibition that I worked on was titled “24 Universes”, which was exhibited in gemmayze at Artlab gallery and I showcased in it 24 nipple prints on saxophone pads. What was the idea from this exhibition? And what is the relationship between your body print and the saxophone? The idea was inspired from my dad. He is a music instructor, he plays the saxophone and at the same time he is a professional repairman of musical instruments. His job is to disassemble the instruments and reassemble them. I always found a visual aesthetic in the saxophone especially when it is disassembled. And the most sensitive entity in the instrument is the auditory pad that adjusts the sound and controls its tone. So I felt that this sponge has the ability to absorb the color as it has the ability to absorb the feminine emotions that I am trying to express. In a patriarchal society, I wanted to be bold and to bring up the topic of the female body in a musical, poetical and direct way. Did you have a job while pursuing your Masters degree? True, during my masters I worked in an international gallery as a gallery assistant in downtown Beirut and this experience, that lasted for 2 years and a half, opened new horizons for me and it arose in me the passion to become an entrepreneur in the field of arts. Why do you think so? When I was a student in university I was not so sure that the major that I chose to study has a future or a financial return that would allow me to live from it. And unfortunately, in the educational system in middle eastern societies there are no university classes that teach art students how to convert their passion into a source for living and how to present themselves to galleries, museums and art institutions. Thus, my experience of working in a gallery gave me this new perspective, the perspective of the gallery and it taught me how an artist can live from his art. And this experience is what I wanted to transmit back to the university students and to support them in their first step in the world of art. How did you plan to do that? After the Beirut explosion, this crucial event in the lives of many people, especially that I also was in downtown during the explosion, I learned that life could be very short and that who has a dream should not wait, not even a single moment, to pursue his dream. Here I decided to develop a virtual gallery, named Arneli Art Gallery, and to transmit through it my experience to fresh graduates of fine arts. What was your first step? The first step that I did was that I chose 15 artists both male and female from Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, who are still in the university or have recently graduated. We have prepared all their necessary files to be able to implement smart and targeted marketing plans that suit the artworks that they create best. What was your plan to help these artists? The major plan was to introduce to the people these artists. And for the thousandth time to say that the middle east and especially Lebanon is full of promising talent that has all the potential to shine. We have created partnerships with several foreign websites that are based in Italy and France that work on supporting and selling artworks from emerging middle eastern artists. In a virtual world, did you consider doing any actual exhibitions for them? Yes, sure! So far we have done several exhibitions. The first exhibition was in July in Beit Misk, it was titled “The Lebanese arts and culture showcase” that was sponsored by Virgin Radio. The second exhibition was in Japan! And this opportunity in itself was huge for all the artists because it was their initial participation in an international show. The name of the exhibition was “The 22nd International Art Exchange Exhibition” that was hosted by JAALA organisation in Japan. It was a very successful show and it opened new cultural and artistic horizons between Lebanon and Japan. And what exhibitions have you done this year? This year we have done 2 exhibitions. The first exhibition was called “Nexus”. It was an online exhibition with a gallery that is based in Spain called Bloom Gallery and the latest exhibition we have done was at Zico House with the curator Manar Ali Hasszn. It was a show with 12 artists both male and female under the title of Parallel Realms. What is your aim from this project? Im gonna answer this one in English. My aim in Arneli Art Gallery is to give a chance and create an opportunity to those who have decided to dedicate their lives for Art and need this first, yet full step. Okay Dzovig, if people want to find you on social media how can they find you? They can find us on Facebook and Instagram @arneliartgallery Okay thank you Dzovig, it has been a pleasure really to interview you.
