Many people who move to Lebanon or start to learn about the Middle East come across a strange and unfamiliar word. At first, they think that people are talking about Jews. But this is a very different religion. They are the Druze. If you listened to our previous podcasts about Lebanon, you’ve heard them mentioned. But who are they? The muwahidun al-Druze* have a huge reputation for such a tiny population. Nobody knows exactly how many there are, but some sources estimate that there are only around 1.5 million Druze in the world. Although the religion originated in Egypt, there are very few Druze still in Egypt, with most surviving communities located in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. There are around 300,000 Druze in Lebanon, around 600,000 in Syria, and around 150,000 in Israel. They largely survived in these areas because they lived in the mountains, which was harder to reach. In Lebanon, you mostly find them in Mount Lebanon, the governorate in the middle of the country named after the mountain range it’s located in. In Syria, they live mainly in As-Suwayda, where Amer is from. This area is also known as Jabal al-Druze and it is in the south of the country, near the border with Jordan. In Israel, they live in the north. Many Druze also live in the Golan Heights, an area of Syria occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War in 1967. A tiny community living in mountains, for understandable reasons. Mountains, after all, are the traditional refuge for persecuted people. And yet, they have a big reputation. This is in part because of some of their intriguing practices, one of which is their style of dress. They truly are a tiny community, but like we said they are quite famous in each of these countries. There are many things about the Druze that attract attention. One of these is how they dress. When you drive through the mountains of Lebanon, you will immediately know when you’re in a Druze village. You see men with white hats and all-black clothes. You might notice that the crotch of their pants hangs low, almost to their knees. This is their traditional dress, and it is still a common sight. If you look closely, you will notice that many women do not wear a hijab. The hijabs that some women wear are not like other hijabs: they are all white, of a lighter fabric, and do not cover all of their hair. Some women also use them to cover their mouth. To understand why, we need to know a bit more about the Druze faith. The Druze faith originated in Egypt around the 11th century. While many Muslims (and even many Druze) claim that the Druze do not follow Islam, the Druze were originally Ismaili Shias. The original Druze believed that the sixth Fatimid caliph, al-Hakim bi Amr Allah was divine. However, the Druze faith is not like any other Shia faith that broke off from the mainstream. Their beliefs include elements of Hinduism, Greek philosophy, Islam, Zoroastrianism, and Christianity, and some features that are unique to the Druze. It is a mystical religion, which focuses more on knowing the mind than dogma. They believe in reincarnation, the idea that when we die we are immediately reborn into another body. This only ends, according to Druze faith, when the soul is united with the Cosmic Mind, similar to the concept of nirvana in Buddhist and Hindu mythology. However, they believe that this only happens within the Druze community. For the more critical of our listeners, if you want to know how they solve the issue of not always having a Druze that is born at the moment one dies, they are reborn in China. We’re not sure why though. The Druze are very serious about this, even if they’re not religious. Go find yourself a Druze and ask them to tell you stories that they’ve heard about children who could give their family a tour of the family home from their past life, or people who remember passwords for the phone from their past life. If you’re confused, good. You’re starting to understand the Druze. Muslim but not really, with some Hindu beliefs, and weird similarities with Greek religious sects. But there’s more, like a strange dichotomy within the religion. In the Druze religion, similar to Islam, alcohol and pork are forbidden. But unlike Islam, not everybody has to follow these rules. This is because there are two types of Druze: the uqqal, and everybody else. The uqqal are the religious elite who have chosen to follow the rules of the religion. To become uqqal, you are initiated into the community, and you learn the secrets of the Druze religion. These secrets are highly protected, and are not revealed to outsiders, not even the other Druze. Around 15% of Druze choose this path. The men who do are called sheikh, and the women sheikha. Sheikha are the ones who cover their hair and mouth. The rest can show off their hair, drink and eat pork as much as they want. You will therefore see uninitiated Druze drunkenly dancing in Beirut’s nightclubs, exactly what I was doing when I met Keire. The Druze also don’t really have mosques. They don’t celebrate most Islamic religious holidays, or any other religious holidays. They don’t fast during Ramadan, for example. The exception to this is Eid al-Adha, the holiday in August celebrating Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac. If you remember your bible stories, God was just testing Abraham, and saved Isaac at the last second. Abraham sacrificed a lamb instead. On Eid al-Adha, therefore, Muslims (and Druze) sacrifice lambs, and the streets run red with their blood. This is the one religious holiday that the Druze do celebrate. Another unique thing about the Druze is their symbol. Islam’s famous crescent moon has no place in Druze beliefs, and is replaced instead with a five-coloured star. Each of the five colours: red, yellow, blue, white and green represent a different concept in the religion. This symbol probably comes from Greek philosophy. In one sense, then, the Druze are more liberal. If you don’t want to be initiated, you can party to your heart’s content. In another sense though, the Druze are known for how strict they are with their community. The Druze are an extremely close community. One of the reasons is that the rules of the community mean that they have to be. It is forbidden to become Druze, and it is forbidden to leave the religion. It is also forbidden to marry outside of the religion. The most terrifying reputation that the Druze have is for enforcing this rule. There are many stories in Lebanon and Syria of the Druze killing outsiders who tried to marry their members. I’m going to interject here with my own personal experience. Whenever somebody from the Middle East finds out that I am dating one of the Druze, I am given very stark warnings that always involve some kind of horrific bodily injury to those who have attempted it. If I disappear mysteriously, podcast listeners, you’ll know who to suspect. The Lebanese also have a joke that there is a Druze plan to kill George Clooney, who was daring enough to marry Amal Alamuddin, whose father was a Lebanese Druze. However, this joke actually doesn’t make any sense because in order to be Druze, both of your parents have to be Druze. Amal’s mother, however, was a Sunni Muslim from Tripoli. You’re probably starting to understand why it’s such a small community. This rule is one of the reasons why the Druze get so upset when somebody marries outside the religion. It endangers the survival of the community, but it also means that their children will not enjoy reincarnation and eternal life. Sorry Amal. The Druze are also famous for their political stances. The most important thing to know about the Druze is that they put the survival of the Druze community above everything else. This is why they are so violent about intermarriage. This violence also shows itself in war and politics. The Druze do not have strong alliances. They will usually take the side of whoever is most likely to protect the community. This means that in Israel, they are the only non-Jewish group allowed to serve in the Israeli Defence Forces. Not because they particularly like it, but because they know that it is safer for the Druze community. They also did not revolt in Syria as much as other groups. The majority stayed on the side of the government. Usually, the Druze believe that they should only fight to defend Druze land. However, life is complicated and many Druze end up fighting in non-Druze lands, such as during the Lebanese civil war. A group called Rejel Karami is emerging now in Syria which argues that Druze should not serve in the army because it means fighting outside of Druze land. However, no matter who they’re fighting against, you should hope that you’re not fighting on the other side. The Druze are known for their cruelty and ferocity in battle. Their trademark is slitting their enemies’ throats, and in the Lebanese civil war they were famous for leaving nobody behind. Okay so we have some clear trust issues going on with the Druze, which are pretty understandable really. Don’t get us wrong, the Druze are great, and like other Lebanese they are often welcoming and kind and gracious. The moral of the story is simply not to fuck with them. If you have more questions at the end of this episode than you did at the beginning, great. That means we did a good job explaining this completely mysterious community who do not share their secrets with outsiders. If you want to find out more about the Druze, we can only wish you luck. * ‘The Druze’ is how they are commonly referred to in English, but this is actually a nickname, based on a historical inaccuracy. The Druze call themselves ‘al-muwahidun’ which literally translates to monotheists, but could be loosely translated as Believers. To reflect this, we refer to the Druze as al-muwahidun Druze throughout this episode.
A tiny community living in mountains, for understandable reasons. Mountains, after all, are the traditional refuge for persecuted people. And yet, they have a big reputation. This is in part because of some of their intriguing practices, one of which is their style of dress. If you’re confused, good. You’re starting to understand the Druze. Muslim but not really, with some Hindu beliefs, and weird similarities with Greek religious sects. But there’s more, like a strange dichotomy within the religion. In one sense, then, the Druze are more liberal. If you don’t want to be initiated, you can party to your heart’s content. In another sense though, the Druze are knowing for how strict they are with their community.
